This is a chopstick-rest gift set created for the Year of the Tiger. We deconstructed the strokes of the Chinese character “虎” and placed them across three surfaces of a wooden box. Viewed in three dimensions, the character becomes legible; seen face by face, each side reveals only a fragment—giving the character an intriguing graphic quality and a strong visual composition.
In a way, Chinese characters share this very trait: for native readers, meaning can often be recognized even from partial glimpses. Our culture also has idioms that speak to this idea—seeing the whole through the small, or catching a glimpse of the tiger through a narrow view. Taking the Year of the Tiger as an occasion, we brought these two together to create a New Year gift with a distinct twist.
We designed and illustrated four uniquely shaped tiger chopstick rests. Each piece can be assembled at a specific angle, and together they form a complete rectangle. The set is hand-carved and painted by experienced artisans.
