On July 12, 2026, “Textopia: Dwelling Places of Language — The Experimental Landscape of Chinese Typography,” an exhibition presented by Juanzong Design Center in collaboration with the School of Design, Central Academy of Fine Arts and Textopia Lab, officially opened at Shenzhen Bay Culture Plaza. As one of the participating designers, UDL Partner Liao Zicheng was invited to join the opening conversation “What Is the Future of Typography?”, together with designers and scholars to explore the evolving role of typography in contemporary contexts.

Bringing together the practices of 30 contemporary Chinese designers, the exhibition spans various fields including type design, book design, experimental typography, and cross-media creation, presenting the diverse possibilities of typography as a visual language and cultural medium. The exhibition is curated by Chief Curator Jiang Hua, Curator Wang Yuwen, and Co-curator Zhang Beinan.

During the conversation, Liao Zicheng shared his perspectives on the relationship between typography, imagery, and public space, exploring how text can create richer visual experiences beyond its function of information communication. Taking UDL’s “Taiping Market” project as an example, he shared how UDL integrated typographic systems, spatial environments, and dynamic visuals to respond to local culture and public spaces.
