The UDL Industrial Design Team partnered with men’s personal care brand MAKE SENSE in a multi-year co-creation process to develop this all-metal razor system. Grounded in user needs, the project combines engineering innovation with design aesthetics to redefine men’s shaving.

Through historical analysis, industry mapping, and research on Asian male skin and usage habits, the team iteratively developed structure, blade systems, and ergonomics, resulting in over 20 patents.

Over decades, mainstream razors evolved toward a “heavy head, light handle” model, concentrating functionality in disposable cartridges while reducing handles to low-cost accessories. This left users dependent on technique rather than structural performance. In response, UDL and MAKE SENSE returned core functions to durable components and minimized consumables to their essential unit.

Blade Core System: Minimal Consumables

Focusing on the shaving experience, we integrated key functions into the long-term reusable handle and reduced consumables to a lightweight Blade Core. Through iterative testing, a “2+2+1” shaving system was developed, balancing efficiency, comfort, and safety.

Blade Replacement: Tactile Interaction

The Blade Core features a simple side-push replacement. A circular button on the back releases the Blade Core laterally; reinsertion auto-locks with no extra steps. Clear mechanical feedback ensures intuitive operation, even with wet hands. The button also provides visual and tactile guidance, seamlessly aligning interaction with the form.

Head Pivot: Controlled Damping

Beyond the floating blades, the head pivot system adapts to complex facial geometries. A metal spring replaces common plastic structures, delivering stable, controllable damping. Different resistance levels can be configured to match user preferences.

Handle Geometry: Optimized Grip

Grip quality directly affects shaving precision and comfort. The handle adopts a triangular cross-section, shifting the pivot axis forward to enhance surface contact and efficiency. The finger contact area transitions into a pentagonal geometry, allowing natural thumb and index placement across grip angles, creating stable support points and reducing hand tension.

The center of gravity is computationally located within the primary force-bearing zone, near the golden ratio to balance agility and stability.

Materials and Manufacturing: Durable & Sustainable

The body is formed via zinc alloy die casting with CNC finishing for refined detailing, ensuring structural strength and assembly precision while delivering a restrained metal surface quality. Multiple handle color options offer personalization within a unified visual language.

In the design of the MAKE SENSE all-metal manual razor, UDL views design not as the stacking of form and function, but as a process of systemic reconstruction. From business model to product architecture to user experience, each layer is analyzed and redefined. This razor does not pursue “more features,” but relies on a disciplined systems approach—assigning clear roles to each component and ensuring tangible feedback in every interaction.

This is UDL’s ongoing exploration of what it means to redefine durable goods: returning value to long-term use, allowing structure to serve real experience, and letting design once again become the origin of user engagement.
