The dog jumps out of a well-known Chinese painting, “The Ten Hunting Dogs of the Kangxi Emperor,” (Ai Qimeng, Qing Dynasty) in celebration of the New Year of the Dog.
The backdrop is derived from traditional Chinese paper cutting and features magpies, plum blossoms, and dogs. The plum blossoms and magpies signify happiness and good luck. The symmetry and circularity of the cut-outs symbolizes family reunion and wishes coming true in the New Year.
The dog hides behind the traditional calligraphy hand-scroll, which translates to “the zodiac dog wishes a prosperous year.”
The dog arrives at the gate of a house whose family is celebrating the Spring Festival. On the door there are Chinese wood block prints portraying Zhao Gongming, the God of Wealth, riding his mount, the Black Tiger. These characters are believed to defend against misfortune of the family. The dog is playing with the Black Tiger, implying a flourishing New Year.
