It's the third year that UDL has designed "Mooncake". It is not a packaging design but a complete proposal based on the mooncake's shape.

We regularly research and publish design proposals in new areas, where we put our design concepts into the topics around us, create concrete examples that are easy to understand, and post them. "The Design of Food" is one of them.

We chose mooncake because it has dual roles in ancient national and contemporary urban cultures. Approaching the re-interpretation of mooncakes as an inner project, we research, define, conceive, design, and produce mooncakes from scratch. The width of the amplitude between old and new cultures creates possibilities and spaces for new designs.

As we all know, today's mooncakes serve people's needs for delicious food and have added meanings of gifting and gratitude. We set the theme of this year's design as "The Shape of Gratitude": fully considering the traditional pastry process and designing mooncakes with modern design language to express the heart of giving.

The shape of traditional handmade mooncakes comes from its production process. We let the pattern of the mooncake continue from the top to the side, creating different structures and shapes. After removing the mold, the contour lines on the side allow the soft and waxy crust to resist gravity before baking. After that, the mooncakes are sent into the oven at 200 degrees to be cooked and shaped. The 5 centimeters in diameter and 2.5 centimeters high mooncakes look like golden medals in the box.

The result looks like a purely decorative and visual design. Indeed, we will randomly replace one of the mooncakes in each box with a gold-plated cast copper one, a gorgeous shape completely stripped of its functionality. We hope the person who receives the gift can feel our gratitude for the design.
